Mike Donovan’s life took a tragic turn on the night of October 10, 2005, when his daughter Nicole and her young son Devin were killed in a devastating car crash caused by a reckless driver that was street racing his Ferrari. Since that life-altering moment, Mike channeled his grief into action, becoming a passionate advocate for road safety and an outspoken critic of speeding—a factor in nearly half of traffic fatalities in Illinois.
In the fall of 2019, Mike stepped back from his work in traffic safety and public speaking, believing his advocacy journey had come to a close.
But as the incoming Trump administration threatens the pillars of democracy, Mike feels a new call to action. Now, with the stakes higher than ever, he’s ready to get back to work—not just to protect the most vulnerable, but to take a stand against oligarchs and fascism, and to fight for a future where justice and safety prevail.
Mike’s dedication to making the world a better place has never wavered. Whether on the roads or in the fight to safeguard democracy, his passion for protecting others continues to inspire those around him to join the fight for what’s right.
Through public speaking and media, Mike has shared his story to inspire others. He is currently developing a podcast "Surviving 47 with Papa Mike" to further amplify his message and connect with a broader audience as we prepare for the incoming Trump administration.
Over the years, Mike spoke to thousands of kids, delivering traffic safety and victim impact presentations. He also held weekly sessions for young drivers, aged 25 and under, who had received tickets and were sentenced to traffic school. Working in conjunction with the DuPage County Bar Association and the DuPage County Traffic Court, Mike developed a unique and effective speaking style. Unfiltered and deeply honest, his presentations were described as George Carlin-esque—raw, relatable, and impactful. Speaking directly from the heart, Mike’s words left a lasting impression, resonating with young audiences and driving home the devastating consequences of speeding, and reckless driving.
For years, Mike worked tirelessly alongside law enforcement agencies, state officials, and advocacy groups to raise awareness about the dangers of excessive speed. Partnering with Illinois State Police and initiatives like the Illinois Speed Awareness Day, he embodied a simple but urgent truth: no destination is worth risking lives on the road
